Jobs in Medical Transcription

You might be able to find legitimate work as a home medical transcriptionist. However, the jobs in medical transcription in most demand are usually those where you are required to work on site at a licensed medical center.

So much is involved in working this very important position that it would be very difficult for many people to try to work this type of occupation at home. It involves a variety of responsibilities which include transcribing recorded dictations made by medical professionals into written medical documents and keying information properly into a computer.

This is a very delicate process, as it involves gaining access to personal records such as autopsy reports, physical examination results, operation result records, progress notes, consultation documents, and more. Quite a bit of information is needed, and workers who attempt this career usually succeed better if they work right on site at a qualified medical facility.

This is not to say it is entirely impossible to succeed at a career in medical transcription, especially with the technology that is used today. People can access all needed documents via e-mail, instant message, or audio/video files. As a result, this opportunity is growing. However, many facilities still prefer that you work right on site because of the confidentiality that is required when working this very important occupation.

Steps to Prepare

Becoming a medical transcriptionist involves some steps to prepare. One of the most important is to receive the proper training and licensing. This training is usually provided at most vocational schools and community colleges.

Additional steps you need to take regarding the preparation for this type of medical career include the following:

Watch out for work-at-home scams. Again, there may be legitimate med transcriptionist jobs available, but you still need to be careful. Beware of sites that offer you access to jobs for a fee. Although some of these sites are legitimate many of them are just trying to take advantage of desperate people. Be careful, and instead try to search popular national job sites where you are not required to pay to search and apply for jobs.

Create an attractive resume and prepare your self properly for the interview. Your resume’s appearance as well as your personal appearance should be spotless. Make sure you dress appropriately for the position you which to apply. It is true what is said about first impressions. You only get once chance at it, so make sure you (and your resume) are at your best on job interview day.

Follow up on jobs you applied for after about a week or so. A simple thank you for the interview is best, or you can send a follow-up thank you letter. It is better to request status of your application to a company by telephone or letter versus e-mail.

Do your best to show your enthusiasm and interest. This will greatly increase your chance of landing the position you want.

If you have been applying for jobs in medical transcription for awhile and have not found one yet, do not despair. This is a fairly competitive position. Just keep your confidence up and be friendly no matter where you are and the position you are looking for may present itself to you when you least expect it.
